This morning, the President of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, Salvador Pendón, and its Managing Director, Ana Gómez, released the data of the domestic market for FITUR 2010. They also revealed the activities to be held by the Tourist Board on the occasion of FITUR, International Travel Fair, 2010.
In his speech, Salvador Pendón said, “The Costa del Sol has managed to keep its privileged place in the domestic market, above other travel destinations in Spain.” According to the tourism indicators in the report, in 2009, the number of Spanish travellers coming to the Costa del Sol went down by 1.9% to 3.1%. But, Mr Pendón qualified the data, “this fall isn’t as sharp as those in Andalusia (9%) or Spain (8.7%), which shows the Costa del Sol’s evolution wasn’t as negative as in other travel destinations.”
In line with this, the report states that the number of Spanish travellers who stayed in hotels in Málaga Province had grown steadily at 2009. Last year, however, it went down by 10.16%, with hotel guests amounting to 2,160,000. The decrease in the number of hotel stays was not as sharp: 6,000,000 (-5.67%). “These different performances have to do with the fact that the average stay lengthened in Málaga-based hotels,” Mr Pendón explained.
With regard to airport arrivals, the Report on the Domestic Market 2009 estimates them at 1,140,000, which means a 19% fall vis-à-vis 2008. This drop is associated with the more frequent use of cars and the high-speed train to get to the province. All in all, Spanish arrivals accounted for 19.91% of total airport arrivals in 2009.
As to predictions for the future, our President said, “In 2010, the number of tourists is expected to stop falling, resuming growth this year or in 2011.”
The most interesting facts in the report are related to the profile changes for Spanish tourists, both in terms of reasons for travelling as in shopping patterns. Thus, although holidays and leisure still prevailed as the main segment sought after by visitors (77.43%), diversification could be observed and other types of products were also mentiones; for instance, business (7.37%) and sports (3.04%).
As to choice of destination, geographical proximity was the key factor for travellers to choose where to go. This is why the Costa del Sol was popular with Andalusian tourists, who were followed by visitors from Madrid and, to a lesser extent, the Basque Country and Catalonia.
Ms Gómez, in turn, introduced the activities to be carried out at Fitur (Madrid, January 20 to 24). The Tourist Board is attending this key event this year on a 30% lower budget: from €250,000, our budget to plan and attend the event has gone down to €170,000.
In a 350-square-metre stand in the Turismo Andaluz space, the Tourist Board is to give information on all the municipalities in Málaga Province to travel professionals and general visitors alike. In addition, the stand will feature a conference room holding about 40 people, where about 20 press conferences and presentations by Town Halls, the Tourist Board, and the Provincial Government, among other institutions, have been scheduled to take place.
