The International Marketing Department of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board has been present in the 8th International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), held in Cannes, where we had a desk of our own in the stand set by Turespaña for Spain as a travel destination.
ILTM began with a luxury travel forum that included two discussions –“Keeping Luxury Relevant in Today’s Market” and “The Future of Luxury Travel”– with leading figures in the luxury travel industry, who represented big firms such as Six Senses, Nomads of the Seas, Fairmont Hotels, One & Only Resorts, Jumeirah, Intercontinental, Virtuoso, Space Adventures, and others.
Also, awards were given to the best five luxury travel experiences around the world. One of the ceremony’s guests was Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
The fair had a system of appointments. The Tourist Board had 41 at our desk in the Turespaña stand. Each meeting took 20 minutes, with a 10-minute break between one appointment and the next.
In addition, our representatives attended a speed networking workshop for cultural tourism and food travel, during which we held eight more meetings. These meetings had a reverse format: the buyers had desks of their own, and suppliers met with them in 4-minute sessions.
This year, ILTM drew over 3,600 luxury travel buyers and suppliers, who held over 43,000 meetings.
The Tourist Board shared its stand with Turismo Andaluz, whereas our affiliates in the hospitality industry attended the event with their hotel chains (Ritz, AC, Paradores, and so on). The following destinations in Spain also had desks of their own: Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao.
The buyers we had meetings with were either well acquainted with our travel destinations, especially with Marbella, or not familiar with them, in the case of those who came from emerging markets. In the meetings with the former, we pointed out the latest developments.
ILTM is an important event in the luxury travel industry, with high-end buyers in search for exclusive destinations. One of the conclusions drawn at the discussions was that China, India, and Russia could become key luxury travel markets. Also, experts said there was good reason to be optimistic about this industry in 2010.
