Today, part of the Tourist Board’s technical staff are travelling to Berlin to attend ITB, one of the three major events on the travel industry’s calendar (the other two are London’s WTM and Madrid’s FITUR). The German fair will unfold from 11 to 15 March.
As in previous editions of ITB, the Tourist Board’s space will be part of the Turismo Andaluz stand. Around one hundred of our affiliates (companies and institutions) will be present in it. Our staff will meet local tour operators with the aim of gauging the German market.

Our main purpose in attending ITB is strengthening our connections with Germany in order to attract more German visitors, since this country is the third most important outbound market to Málaga Province –the second among international markets, only behind Britain.

Germany is the largest outbound market in the world. It is expected to produce 153 million tourists by 2020, thus leading the global outbound market ranking. The German market has a 74.8% travelling rate –one of the highest in the world. Each German tourist makes 1.3 trips a year on average.

The favourite destinations among the Germans travelling abroad still lie in Mediterranean Europe (26.3% share). Within this region, Spain is by far the most popular country (13% share), followed by Italy, Turkey, and Austria.

In 2008, Germans accounted for 17.5% of Spain’s incoming tourists (10,049,039 out of 57,417,871). This means a 0.2% fall over the previous year. This drop, however, is considerably less severe than for international travellers as a whole (-2.6%). 934,561 of these tourists came to Andalusia. Therefore, the region’s share was 9.3%, with a 4.7% fall vis-à-vis 2007.

7,096,721 stayed in hotels last year. They were 0.9% fewer than in 2007. Their average stay took 6.31 days, remaining stable since 2006.

In 2008, 579,395 German travellers arrived in Málaga’s airport, a figure showing a 3% fall over 2007. However, Germany’s share in the number of total air passengers rose by 0.26%, reaching 9.4%, taking Germans coming to Málaga via Palma or Madrid into account as well.

Almost half the German tourists (49.7%) arriving at Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport in 2008 came from three cities: Frankfurt (21.1%), Düsseldorf (15.7%), and Berlin (12.8%).
